Friends, it’s finally that time again! Dollar General is having a Clearance Event from Friday, February 28 through Sunday, March 2!
The most exciting news about this is … the Clearance Section and POG items are included!
WHO?

All Dollar General stores will be participating in this event. Even if they “say” they aren’t … they are, trust me on this.
Now, I do want to make one thing clear about this – all stores will be participating, *but* the types of items sold at each Dollar General CAN vary.
For instance, one store may carry a specific Swiffer product, while the other may not.
I get so many comments on social media saying “my store doesn’t do this” or “not at ‘x’ store”.
99.999% of the time, this is due to user error – usually, in grabbing the WRONG items with a DIFFERENT barcode.
The other 0.001% of the time is due to some employees telling you that they “aren’t having this sale” because they stock it in the back to keep for themselves, co workers or family. As much as I hate to admit it, it’s the truth.
However, most employees are genuinely nice and will root you on. Either way, please be nice to them – no matter what.
WHAT?

Dollar General’s Clearance Event means that clearanced items will be an additional 50% off the sticker price. This time, the clearance section and POG items will be included.
Please note – what you find will be based upon how well your store upkeeps. Some stores are very swift about moving items to the clearance section while others wont have much of anything – and this is where a lot of people get confused.
If you go searching for items from visuals that I’ve made, and none are in the clearance section (TIP – the “big ticket” items likely wont be) you’re probably at a better advantage than you would think.
If a store has nothing in the clearance aisle you’re likely at advantage. This means that there is a higher probability that these items are located on their normal shelves.
With that being said, it’s up to YOU to educate yourself with the items that are truly on clearance – remember that scent, sizes and ounces matter.
WHEN?

This Clearance Event will be three days long. This will last from when the store opens on Friday, February 28, to the end of day (closing) on Sunday, March 2.
WHERE?

All Dollar General locations within the USA.
WHY?

I get tons of comments on social media saying “It’s because they’re toxic!” when posting clearance event visuals. This is not true in the slightest.
There are a few reasons why Dollar General may discontinue items from their stores:
1. Product Repackaging – If you’ve been a couponer for a while, I want you to go back and look at pictures of your toilet paper hauls from three years ago. Do they look the same now as then? Exactly.
Brands are often updating their packaging to fresh, clean designs and can include a little tweak here and a little tweak there.
Because they updating packaging, the old ones are often clearanced out.
2. Shrinkflation – I’m sure that you’ve heard this term before. Shrinkflation is when brands shrink the package and ounces, but keep the price the same or increase the price.
If you’ve been couponing for a while, an example of shrinkflation is Mr. Clean All Purpose Cleaner. Remember those huge bottles that were $4 each?
They’re basically non existent now, and have been replaced with the 1/2 size that are $6. Yeah, fun.
3. No Room – One last reason why items are placed on clearance is because Dollar General no longer has room for said item(s).
If an item is not selling well, why would they continue to keep it on the shelf?
Instead of keeping an item on the shelf that doesn’t sell well, they will clearance it out in order to make room for another item.
HOW?

Even if you are a beginner, you can still do this! During the Dollar General Clearance Event, items will automatically ring up the 50% off price. You do not need to do anything!
If you’re at a new system, do NOT panic when you see the items being rang up – at new system stores, you will initially see the full price as the cashier is scanning.
However, if you look at the pinpad – you will see the full price along with a “-$x.xx promotion” beneath each item. This is the system accounting for the 50% off price, and this will be reflected when the cashier hits total.
Using Coupons During Event

One of the best parts of the clearance event is that you CAN use digital coupons to lower your out of pocket even more.
Old systems are about to be a thing of the past in April, so I’m not even going to bother touching on them.
At new system stores, the best you’ll be able to do is get an item for free.
Make sure that while you’re in store you’re scanning using the barcode feature. There you will see the items price. If you scroll down a bit, you will be able to see if there are any digital coupons attaching to the product.
Rebate Apps

Don’t forget, saving money doesn’t stop at the register.
In order to maximize your savings, scan your receipts to rebate apps like Fetch or Ibotta – where you can earn cash back towards gift cards that you can redeem!
The Bottom Line

Leave the store neater than you found it. One of the main reasons couponers get such a bad rep is because they go into stores and leave a mess!
Not only is this rude, it’s very inconsiderate. How would you feel if you had multiple tasks to do – for someone to come into the store and trash it, leaving you another task to do? PLEASE don’t do this.
Be kind to the employees. They have NO control over what an item rings up at the register. They do not get paid enough to get yelled at by customers. 99% of the time if an item is ringing up wrong at the register, it is USER ERROR – not scanning to check before buying, or blindly grabbing an item just because it “looks” like one you saw a visual for. The other 1% is because it can sometimes take time for the price to update in the system – again, the employee has NO control over this.
If you’ve found my visuals helpful and feel inclined to support the time, effort, and mileage that goes into creating them – donations are always appreciated but never expected. Click HERE to donate via CashApp or Venmo.
